Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced today the appointment of Jonathan Mayer as the Justice Department’s first Chief Science and Technology Advisor and Chief Artificial Intelligence (AI) Officer.

Attorney General Garland highlighted the necessity for the Justice Department to adapt to the fast-paced changes in science and technology to effectively uphold the rule of law, safeguard national security, and protect civil rights. He expressed confidence that Mayer's expertise would prove invaluable in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies.

As the Chief Science and Technology Advisor, Mayer will play a pivotal role in advising the Attorney General and collaborating with various components within the Justice Department on complex issues requiring technical expertise. This includes matters related to cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies. Mayer will lead efforts to enhance the Department's technological capacity, including recruiting technical talent to ensure preparedness for future challenges.

Jonathan Mayer, currently an assistant professor at Princeton University’s Department of Computer Science and School of Public and International Affairs, brings a wealth of experience at the intersection of technology, policy, and law. His research, with a focus on criminal procedure, national security, and consumer protection, has earned him recognition in the field. Mayer holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.

Mayer will be situated in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Policy, spearheading the development of a team of technical and policy experts specializing in areas crucial to the Department’s responsibilities, such as cybersecurity and AI. This team will serve as advisors to leadership and collaborate with various components and federal partners on cutting-edge technological issues.

Moreover, in line with the President’s Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence, Attorney General Garland has designated Mayer as the Justice Department’s Chief AI Officer. In this role, Mayer will oversee intra-departmental and cross-agency efforts on AI and related issues. Additionally, he will lead the newly established Emerging Technology Board, tasked with coordinating and governing AI and other emerging technologies across the Department.

The appointment of Jonathan Mayer underscores the Justice Department's commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements and leveraging AI for the benefit of the nation.
