EU-US Joint Technology Competition Policy Dialogue: Advancing AI Governance in the Digital Economy
In an effort to address the challenges posed by the rapidly evolving digital economy, leaders from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the U.S. Department of Justice's Antitrust Division (DOJ), and the European Commission convened today for the fourth session of the EU-US Joint Technology Competition Policy Dialogue (TCPD). The high-level dialogue aimed at fostering collaboration in ensuring fair competition in the digital sphere and exchanging best practices to address emerging threats.
FTC Chair Lina Khan emphasized the critical role of international cooperation in tackling the growing influence of AI and algorithmic decision-making tools in the business landscape. “Engaging with our international partners and sharing best practices will be especially critical,” stated Chair Khan, underlining the importance of platforms like the Joint Technology Dialogue in addressing the challenges of the rapidly evolving digital economy.
Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter echoed Chair Khan's sentiments, highlighting the need for global collaboration in the face of expanding data monopolies and the proliferation of artificial intelligence. Kanter emphasized that exchanging best practices with global counterparts strengthens the ability of U.S. authorities to effectively serve the American people.
European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager underscored the importance of cooperation in addressing global challenges posed by the fast-paced technology sector. "The fast-moving technology sector raises global challenges such as regarding artificial intelligence and cloud computing more broadly," stated Executive Vice-President Vestager, emphasizing the need for close cooperation to anticipate and address these challenges for the benefit of consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
The dialogue centered on various aspects of digital competition, with a particular focus on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Additionally, discussions revolved around ensuring that merger enforcement aligns with the realities of the modern digital economy and recent developments in enforcement involving technology platforms.
Officials deliberated on the evolving business strategies of major tech companies, particularly investments and partnerships between major cloud providers and AI providers, and their implications for enforcement.
Concluding the meeting, the authorities reaffirmed the importance of ongoing collaboration within the framework of the TCPD to ensure fair competition in the technology sector. The TCPD will continue its efforts through high-level meetings and regular discussions at a technical level to address the evolving challenges in the digital landscape.
The fourth session of the EU-US Joint Technology Competition Policy Dialogue marks a significant step towards strengthening cooperation and addressing the complex challenges posed by the digital economy on both sides of the Atlantic.
