FTC Joins Global Initiative to Strengthen Privacy and Data Security Enforcement

By

In a move towards bolstering international cooperation on privacy and data security enforcement, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has officially signed on to participate in the Global Cooperation Arrangement for Privacy Enforcement (Global CAPE). This multilateral arrangement facilitates collaboration, investigative assistance, and information-sharing among privacy authorities worldwide.

The decision reflects the FTC's commitment to keeping pace with the increasingly global nature of commerce. By participating in Global CAPE, the FTC aims to streamline cooperation with other international members on issues related to privacy and data security law enforcement. This collaborative effort eliminates the need for negotiating separate memoranda of understanding with each participating authority, ensuring a more efficient and cohesive approach.

Global CAPE, a nonbinding agreement, complements the existing Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation Cross-border Privacy Rules (APEC CBPR). Originally designed to foster cooperation among APEC's Asian Pacific countries, Global CAPE extends its reach beyond this region, allowing for broader participation from countries worldwide.

The Commission's unanimous 3-0 vote authorizes FTC staff to actively engage in the Global CAPE initiative. This move underscores the FTC's dedication to working with counterpart agencies globally, promoting robust antitrust, consumer protection, and data privacy enforcement and policy.

As the FTC continues to navigate the evolving landscape of privacy and data security, its involvement in Global CAPE exemplifies a commitment to international collaboration and the pursuit of effective solutions to the challenges posed by the globalized digital economy.
