FTC Launches "Operation AI Comply" to Combat Deceptive AI Practices

By

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced a major crackdown on companies misusing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to deceive consumers. Dubbed "Operation AI Comply," this initiative includes five law enforcement actions against firms allegedly exploiting AI hype or selling AI tools that enable unfair and deceptive practices.

FTC Chair Lina M. Khan emphasized the agency's stance, stating, "Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal. The FTC's enforcement actions make clear that there is no AI exemption from the laws on the books."

Among the notable cases are:

  1. DoNotPay, a company claiming to offer an "AI lawyer," has agreed to pay $193,000 and notify subscribers about its service limitations after failing to deliver on promises of replacing human lawyers with AI.
  2. Ascend Ecom faces allegations of defrauding consumers of at least $25 million through false claims about AI-powered tools for online storefronts.
  3. Ecommerce Empire Builders is charged with making unsubstantiated claims about AI-powered e-commerce training programs and storefronts.
  4. Rytr, an AI writing assistant service, has been ordered to cease offering tools for generating fake consumer reviews.
  5. FBA Machine allegedly made false promises about guaranteed income through AI-powered online storefronts, costing consumers over $15.9 million.

These actions follow previous FTC cases involving AI-related claims, including those against Automators, Career Step, NGL Labs, Rite Aid, and CRI Genetics.

The FTC's operation aims to protect consumers from AI-powered scams and ensure that honest businesses can compete fairly in the rapidly evolving AI marketplace. As AI technology continues to advance, the FTC's actions serve as a warning to companies that they must adhere to existing consumer protection laws, regardless of the technology involved.
