The UK Information Commissioner has created a new code to support journalists in understanding the data protection law that applies when they use personal information for their work. The code provides clear guidance on how to comply with existing regulations, as well as references and examples of relevant case law. It is intended to complement current industry codes and has been shaped based on advice from media organisations, industry representatives, civil society and other stakeholders. Once formally accepted by the Secretary of State, the code will take effect and help guide journalists in protecting people's personal data while still allowing their work to serve the public interest.
