ICO Chief Warns of Trust Erosion in AI by 2024 - Calls on Tech Developers to Prioritize Privacy
John Edwards, the UK Information Commissioner, gave a keynote address at techUK's Digital Ethics Summit 2023, discussing the role of privacy in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and warning that people may lose trust in AI if it is not properly regulated. He cited research that shows growing concerns about the use of AI and called on developers to embed privacy into their products from the start.
Mr. Edwards acknowledged the benefits of AI for businesses, such as improved customer service and quicker technical issue resolution. However, he emphasized that these benefits should not come at the expense of people's privacy and warned that the ICO will take action against those who do not comply with data protection laws. He stated that there are no excuses for "bad actors" who use technology like AI to gain an unfair advantage over their competitors.
Mr. Edwards explained that privacy and AI go hand in hand and can not be separated. He urged companies to prioritize privacy in their use of AI and promised firm and robust regulatory intervention for those who do not comply. He also assured attendees that the ICO can offer guidance and support in ensuring privacy is safeguarded when using AI.
In conclusion, Mr. Edwards stressed that non-compliance with data protection laws will not be profitable and that the ICO will impose fines accordingly. He emphasized that privacy must be considered and protected in all uses of AI to maintain trust and innovation in society.
