Over Two Million in Penalties Issued by ICO for Unlawful Marketing Calls

By

This article reports that five businesses have been fined a total of £435,000 for making nearly half a million unlawful marketing calls to people registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS). The companies were attempting to make people sign up for white goods insurance, such as washing machine, kitchen appliance or boiler cover, and in some cases were using pressure tactics and false or misleading statements. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has warned that it will not stop investigating and taking action against companies which disregard the law, and encouraged people to register with the TPS if they wish to stop receiving unsolicited calls. It is also recommended that people report any suspicious calls to the ICO, as this can help them in their investigations.
