Protecting the Personal Data of Victims of Domestic Abuse: Preventing Breaches and Ensuring Safety
The UK Information Commissioner has called on organisations to properly handle personal data in order to protect victims of domestic abuse from being exposed to further harm. In June 2022, the ICO has issued reprimands to seven organisations for careless data breaches which affected victims who had reached out for help. Common issues highlighted by these cases include a lack of staff training and inadequate procedures in place for protecting information. Therefore the ICO is providing support and advice to help organisations understand the importance of data protection in protecting victims of domestic abuse. Organisations are encouraged to provide thorough staff training and double-check records before sharing any personal data. They should also be prepared to meet accessibility requirements like translation services or interpreting.
