UN Global Compact Launches New Business Guidance on Sustainable Infrastructure

By

In a recent event held in Beijing, the UN Global Compact, the world's most extensive corporate sustainability initiative, introduced groundbreaking guidance and assessment tools to empower companies in advancing sustainable infrastructure within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The event brought together high-level representatives from government, businesses, and academia.

The released guidance materials include "Global Compact Ten Principles Applied in Infrastructure Sectors under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI): A Practical Guide for Private Sector Players" and "Maximizing Impact towards the SDGs: Guidance and Assessment Tool for Companies to Advance Sustainable Infrastructure under the Belt and Road Initiative." These resources delve into the essential role that businesses engaged in the BRI play in fostering innovation, economic growth, and efficient resource utilization to steer infrastructure projects towards long-term sustainable development.

The reports emphasize the critical link between the Belt and Road Initiative and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They offer pragmatic tools and insights for companies to ensure that their projects align with global sustainability trends, particularly the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact that encompass human rights, labor practices, environmental conservation, and anti-corruption efforts.

Sanda Ojiambo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, highlighted the importance of infrastructure projects in supporting both economic growth and social development. She stressed the need for such projects to be inclusive, sustainable, and adhere to responsible business practices. The newly launched guidance reports and case studies aim to assist businesses in making infrastructure a transformative platform for a more sustainable and inclusive world.

In addition to the guidance materials, the United Nations unveiled an online platform called the "Partnership Data Hub on Sustainable Infrastructure for the Belt and Road Initiative." This platform is designed to accelerate the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals and serves as a valuable resource for the private sector. It aims to facilitate high-quality Belt and Road Cooperation while promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Simultaneously, private sector case studies were introduced to showcase real-world examples of companies advancing corporate sustainability within the context of the Belt and Road Initiative. These case studies serve as practical illustrations of how businesses can drive sustainability through their participation in large-scale infrastructure projects.

The initiative also witnessed a High-Level Steering Committee meeting on the Action Platform. The committee comprises 19 members from diverse backgrounds, including various regions, countries, sectors, and age groups. These committee members, including public sector leaders, business executives, academics, representatives from multilateral institutions, civil society, and youth, collectively emphasized the pivotal role the Action Platform can play in promoting responsible business engagement to expedite the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals through infrastructure projects.

The successful completion of this project was made possible through the support of the UN Peace and Development Fund (UNPDF), which fostered collaboration among various stakeholders and provided essential resources to bring the initiative to fruition.

The UN Global Compact's latest guidance and assessment tools represent a significant step toward achieving sustainable infrastructure development within the Belt and Road Initiative, ultimately contributing to broader global sustainability objectives.
